Base Camp

A tent glows under the night sky in the Alabama Hills, outside Lone Pine, California — the rounded granite country at the foot of Mount Whitney where Hollywood shot its Westerns for decades. Hopalong Cassidy, Gene Autry, and the Lone Ranger all had their shootouts among these rocks; the stars stuck around after the film crews left.
