Castle Dome

The sun goes down behind the Castle Dome Mountains, the turreted peaks that gave the range its name rising black over the Yuma County desert. Silver miners worked these foothills a century and a half ago; the boomtown is a ghost town now, and the mountains have the evenings to themselves. Photographed in 2018 by Carol M. Highsmith, whose decades-long project to document America lives in the Library of Congress.
