First Light

Sunrise at Norris Junction, and the bison are already at work — grazing through the thermal steam that rises off Yellowstone's oldest, hottest ground. The light comes through sideways, the steam catches fire, and for a few minutes the whole basin glows. Photographed by Jacob W. Frank for the National Park Service, whose rangers shoot the park in hours no visitor sees.
