Heading Home

Dusk in the Nebraska Sandhills, and the cows are heading home — single file across the grass hills near Mullen, population 400-and-something, where the evening commute has four legs. The Sandhills are the largest grass-stabilized dune field in the Western Hemisphere; from the highway they just look like the quietest place on Earth. Photographed by Carol M.
