Marana

The sun drops behind the Sonoran Desert near Marana, Arizona, and for a few minutes every saguaro on the bajada becomes a silhouette — arms up, holding the last of the light. This one stood closest to the road. Photographed in 2018 by Carol M. Highsmith, whose decades-long project to document America lives in the Library of Congress.
