Seligman

Night falls on Seligman, Arizona, and the Snow Cap lights up — the roadside stand Juan Delgadillo built from scrap lumber in 1953 and ran for half a century with a menu full of jokes ("dead chicken," "sorta lemonade") and a door handle that never worked the way you expected. Route 66 has no better monument to the art of the roadside stop. Photographed by Carol M. Highsmith, whose decades-long project to document America lives in the Library of Congress.
