The Diving Lady

Since 1960, the Diving Lady has been mid-dive over Main Street in Mesa, Arizona — a three-panel neon girl who leaps, arcs, and splashes in sequence all night long above the old Starlight Motel. A storm knocked her down in 2010; the town raised the money and put her back up. Some signs are just signs. This one has a fan club. Photographed by Carol M. Highsmith, whose decades-long project to document America lives in the Library of Congress.
