Thunderbird

Elko, Nevada — cattle country, casino country, and about as far from anywhere as the Interstate gets. The Thunderbird's neon has burned over Idaho Street since the era when this was the Victory Highway and a motel sign had to out-glow the casinos next door. Photographed in 2022 by Carol M. Highsmith, whose decades-long project to document America lives in the Library of Congress.
