Firehole

Deep in a Yellowstone night, the Milky Way rises over Castle Geyser and the Firehole River — a river named by mountain men who watched steam pour off its surface and figured the water itself was burning. The geyser's cone took thousands of years to build; the light overhead took 25,000 years to arrive. Some scenes ask you to feel small. This one insists. Photographed by the National Park Service, whose rangers work the park in hours no visitor sees.
