Mother Road

A bending stretch of old Route 66 runs empty through Mohave County, Arizona — the Mother Road, once the way west for a million families, now a two-lane ghost the interstates couldn't quite erase. Stand in the middle of it long enough and nothing comes. Photographed in 2018 by Carol M. Highsmith, whose decades-long project to document America lives in the Library of Congress.
