Socorro

The sky catches fire over Socorro County, New Mexico — a line of homemade fence posts and barbed wire running toward the horizon, the kind a rancher strings by hand and mends for a lifetime. Socorro means "relief" in Spanish; the day's last light delivers it. Photographed in 2020 by Carol M. Highsmith, whose decades-long project to document America lives in the Library of Congress.
