The Castle

Castle Geyser goes off in the dark — a tower of water and steam climbing into a sky full of stars, with nobody around to see it but the photographer. The cone it erupts from is one of the oldest in Yellowstone, built mineral by mineral over thousands of years into the battlement shape that named it. It does this every dozen-or-so hours, applause or not. Photographed by the National Park Service, whose rangers work the park in hours no visitor sees.
