The Lucky

On the old end of Fremont Street, the Lucky Motel's neon still glows — the motel itself long gone, the sign too good to take down. This is the Las Vegas from before the volcanoes and the mega-resorts: a $12 room, a cursive promise, and luck as the whole business model. Photographed by Carol M. Highsmith, whose decades-long project to document America lives in the Library of Congress.
