Dusk settles over Central Avenue as the Monterey Motel's neon flickers to life — a survivor from 1946, still glowing on what was once Route 66. Photographed in Albuquerque, New Mexico by Carol M. Highsmith, whose decades-long project to document America lives in the Library of Congress.
