Tularosa

The gypsum dunes of the Tularosa Basin hold the day's last color long after the sun is gone — the largest field of white sand on Earth, glowing pink and violet like something from another planet that happens to be in New Mexico. Photographed in 2021 by Carol M. Highsmith, whose decades-long project to document America lives in the Library of Congress.
