Where the Pavement Ends

On the outskirts of Tucson, a ranch gate makes a promise: this is where the pavement ends and the West begins. Beyond it, the Sonoran Desert takes over — saguaro, creosote, and the kind of quiet that doesn't exist on the paved side. Photographed in 2018 by Carol M. Highsmith, whose decades-long project to document America lives in the Library of Congress.
